The Icon Bar: News and features: Oregano2 gets a release

Oregano2 gets a release

Posted by Andrew Poole on 12:47, 7/3/2003 | , ,

At last, the time has come and Oregano2 is now available to buy from the Castle website.

John Ballance broke the news on the Oregano smartgroup last night. And, as promised in the posting, a demo version is now available to download.

After about an hour playing with it, it seems like a very nice web browser to use, and seems faster than its predecessor. One major problem is that the scrollbars simply don't work, leaving you no option but to drag the page round, although you should get used to that after a while.

I'd suggest a rephrasing of the last sentence from "One major problem, being that the scrollbars, simply don't work, leaving..." to "One major problem is that the scrollbars simply don't work, leaving...", as the former, simply doesn't work.

(spot the deliberate mistake)

andy/takka.

Unregistered user Why doesn't someone just port KHTML? It's been done for Mac OS X (Carbon) and even AtheOS, and the Safari work should make it even easier. Throw in KJS and other associated technologies and you've something in the same league as other platforms.

Just don't integrate it Microsoft-style with the operating system, Castle, or you'll be poking another wasps' nest with a big licence controversy stick. :-)

Well, Peter Naulls was doing something with Konqueror as part of his Unix Porting Project - see this:

http://www.chocky.org/unix/browser.html

Don't know the current state of it, because I can't afford to resubscribe at the moment :-(

Well the cookie handling seems better, now the cookie from my favourite site (www.g503.com) works correctly so I'll be upgrading :-)

Unregistered user Yeah, it sounds easy when you say it fast like that ;-)
I think Peter Naulls was planning to port Konqueror but has now decided to port the graphics enabled version of Links (Lynx?) web browser first.
www.chocky.org/unix (though I don't seem to be able to get there at the moment - probably the cacky internet connection we have at work)
Should be re-subscribing to it when I get paid next week :P
Cheers!

Unregistered user I have downloaded the Demo of O2 and it has certainly been developed considerably from the first demo made avilable late 2001.

Sdaly however there is still no sign of a search within page facility (somthing I need to use regularily).

I also note that the with this demo that cliking on URL's in postings in Plout does not seem to start a page fetch?.

In spite of this I have sent of my order for the upgrade. Hoping that that will show some inprovement.

Vic

Unregistered user Why doesnt just go full the full whack and port windows?
Why doesnt someone port unix?
Why dosent someone port Mac OS?
Why doesnt someone port XP?

Why don't more ppl learn how to port rather than offering suggestions which have already been discussed else where.

To be fair, suggestions of porting things often come from users; and they often come in the form of "Why" rather than "PORT IT! NOW!", even if they could be a bit more polite, and are very naive.

Developers sometimes forget there is a user base out there who simply don't want to program, or don't have time.

(And before Chocky arrives - an ideal way for users to help porting is by signing up to his excellent Unix Porting Project ;-))

Unregistered user This is the best browser I have used on RISC OS. No question about it.

I am hopuing that Castle will have the manual sent out as soon as possible. Little tips like fast scrolling by holding the mouse pointer at the top or bottom of the page are things that should be told about.

That scrolling thing is irritating. They should make iy so you have to hold a mouse button down aswell.

Unregistered user The scrolling is a disaster. The whole point of the vertical scroll bar is so that you can see how big the document is in relation to what you can see. If you want to go straight to the bottom you have to wait for it to scroll through the whole document. Nope - a big fat zero out of ten for that misfeature.

I'm sure they'll add that facility in time - remember, there's good reasons why it isn't there (it's not needed in Oregan's original product). I'm sure Castle will add it at some point.

Unregistered user While I agree that the current scroll bar situation is far from ideal (or even far from nice) Oregano 2 as it is usable.

For instance you do not actually have to wait for it to scroll all the way through to get to the end of a long page the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl End" will accomplish that.
