CAMiLEON and Midlands Show stuff

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:50, 5/12/2002 | , , , ,

Domesday ProjectFirst up, Jake Mon... Phil Mell... Phil "Jake Monkeyson" Mellor has sent us an excellent write-up of the CAMiLEON project meeting on Monday. The meeting was to show progress on converting the old BBC Master based Domesday project to be readable using current technology. The write-up deserves a page of its own, so check it out!

And just to shoehorn another page in when I really should post another news item, Alasdair sent us some piccies of the Midlands show on Saturday - including a screenshot of a working Iyonix desktop.

Well, it's taken me over 15 years to review a BBC Master system, so don't hold your breath...

Mmm, Iyonix desktop :)

Not too sure about their replacement resize and thing-i-can't-remember-from-RO4 window icons :o

The other ones look pretty good though :)

And I see there are some pictures of Steve I'm-not-Rob-D Turnbull there :o

Look at the screenshot of the Iyonix desktop - the icons aren't actually as bad as I first feared (though I see the drive icons have changed - unless that's just on Jack's own machine...) - BUT BUT BUT! Check out the Switcher icon - look at it closely, the shadow on it is of the Select cog! Oooooh, but what does this mean!

...that RISC OS Select is a shadow of its former self?

Why would they need to when RISC OS 5 has nothing to do with Select?

Some older RO5 shots had the select cog as the switcher icon.

From http://select.riscos.com/Information/cogwheel.htm:

"The launch of a new version of RISC OS with the Select scheme seemed like as good a time as any to introduce a new logo to represent the operating system as a whole. Since the demise of Acorn and the acquisition of its name by a third party, the use of the Acorn 'nut' logo to represent RISC OS has become inappropriate, and the newer 3D cube logo refers specifically to RISC OS 4. A new generic design was therefore required, which could be used to refer to all versions of RISC OS, past, present and future."

So, the cog logo is just as suitable for RISC OS 5 as RISC OS 4 and earlier.

The AMPlayer frontend can be seen running on the iconbar... so can anyone confirm/deny that the AMPlayer module is 32-bit compatible?

Unregistered user Hi,

AEmulator may have been running, I don't know either way. With regard to the other icons, they were just a raft of things Jack clicked on to make it look busy to take the picture, I can neither confirm nor deny that any of the apps actually function (thought I guess draw and alarm do!).

hummm... reviews, I'll be reviewing one for Shopper next week hopefully so if I have time of an evening, I'll put together a second review from a RISC OS pov for you guys.

Cheers,
a
